Title: Trump Has Abandoned the Battlefield of COVID Like a Coward
Post by: AgapeFire on December 09, 2020, 11:09:16 am
He's deserted Americans.  No human empathy.  No acknowledgement of the record winter surge.  No leadership.

He's like a general who has walked off the battlefield.

He's out tweeting about stock market highs that are irrelevant to most Americans (the wealthiest 10% of of Americans own 84% of the stock market).

COVID cases have passed 200,000 per day and nearing 3,000 daily deaths.  20 million+ Americans are collecting some form of unemployment with COVID benefits set to expire the end of the month.  Millions will be facing eviction January 1st.

Fake news.

The 1918 flu pandemic virus killed an estimated 195,000 Americans during October alone.

He's also abandoned the battlefield like a traitor who is trying to get as many Americans infected as possible.
That's what is ACTIONS constitute. Anyone is free to guess what his motivations are.

Good point.  I don't know if there was any attempt to keep daily tallies in 1918.

We've surpassed 3,000 daily deaths today.  Would it take 5,000...10,000 daily deaths for Trump to speak a single word of acknowledgement or comfort?

Pray for our weak and sick.  Pray for our medical workers.  Pray for those who have to work and be out and about during this terrible time!

Seriously doubt it but it should give us all some perspective on how bad it was considering the US population was around 100 million then.

re: motivations

The most straight-forward motivation has been to preserve corporate profits and the stock market for his wealthy donors.  Shutting down businesses too long would hurt those profits, which would in turn bleed into the stock market's valuations.  Downplaying the virus, encouraging people to go out and spend money, and keeping things open and forcing people to work in the midst of dangerous conditions keeps the money machine rolling for the elites/wealthy/corporate America.

Big GOP donors like the Mercer family (Trump's biggest), the Koch Brothers, big oil, etc. tend to be psychopathic extreme libertarians, who think the only thing that shouldn't be allowed is directly killing thy neighbor outright (even if it's okay to kill them from years of unregulated toxic chemical poisoning, cheat them in complex financial scams, burn down social safety nets, etc.) in the name of individual liberty and economic freedom.

There may be other motivations (I have considered one that I'm too embarrassed to mention, as it would sound overly conspiratorial), but money seems to be the easiest and most obvious one.

The tragic loss of life is overshadowed in his mind by the greatest tragedy in American world history: he failed to win re-election.

I get the hatred for Trump and the blame. How is everyone feeling about Merkel and Germany about now? 1/4 the US population and similar deaths per capita right now. Has she abandoned Germans?

I'm not that familiar with Germany's COVID situation, but from what little I know, Merkel seems humane (nothing intentionally corrupt in her response as far as I know).  Is that the case or has she been extremely incompetent and/or corrupt?

Lifelong con-artist, Donald Trump, on the other hand, has intentionally misled the American people, refuses to even acknowledge the horrific situation (Merkel has many times in somber and empathetic tone), and has tried to profit from it and help his rich donors profit too.  The initial ban on European travel excluded the U.K. and Ireland, because he had business & resorts there (per Politico).  U.K., at the time, had one of the worst outbreaks in the world.

He told Woodward he wanted to downplay the virus.

The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!
- Donald Trump tweet February 24.

At the exact same time, Trump officials were raising concerns about the virus privately and hedge funds with insider info. dumped stocks:  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/14/us/politics/stock-market-coronavirus-trump.html

In my opinion, it’s a great time to buy stocks or into your 401K. I would be all in... let’s see if I’m right...
- Eric Trump on February 28.

Family of treasonous criminals.  They knew the dangers.  All throughout the pandemic, Trump has undermined efforts to get it under control.  Pushed for less testing to hide case counts.  Mocked face masks and social distancing.  Had his administration bully CDC/HHS officials to get with the WH propaganda.  Brags about the stock market, while not acknowledging 300,000 dead Americans.  He's profane in morality and a psychopath.

So Trump is a jerk. Got it. Merkel is not and Germany has about the same deaths per day per capita right now. Is that her fault?

I would not blame Merkel for anything (at least, not in the same way) if she's not intentionally tried to mislead people on COVID or sabotage Germany's attempts at safety, bdsimon.  For me, blame can come from:

-intentional sabotage
-incompetence
-gross negligence

There may be other causes of blame I'm not thinking of, but those are the first that come to mind.  Case counts and deaths don't always reflect blame.  Sometimes, a population has better demographics (India, for example, has one of the best demographics when it come to age - being very young - but not so much when it comes to poverty).  Asian countries have low rates of obesity, while the U.S. is high on that list.  Sometimes policymakers and leaders do the right things, but the citizens themselves disobey rules.  In California, for example, leaders locked down and had the right message early on, but the residents themselves grew tired of the restrictions and went out and without masks in July.  They were a top surge state this summer, along with Texas, Florida, and Arizona - the latter three having looser restrictions and pro-business GOP leaders pushing for reopening at all costs.  CA's leaders had some good responses, but the people themselves did not take to it.  It's also the case that CA is overcrowded in many areas as well.

I'm not that familiar with everything done in Germany this past year, so cannot comment too much.  I mainly recall they had a 10K euros fine for those not wearing masks.  I see that Germany has a population of 83 million and the U.S. has one of 328 million.  We have 4x their population size.  For the past two weeks we've had 200,000 cases and 2,200 deaths/day on average.  Germany, in the past two weeks has had cases in the 20,000 range and deaths at about 500/day.  So, we've had 10x as many cases and 4x as many deaths.  We are blowing them away on case counts, but are similar when it comes to per capita deaths.  I'm not sure why that is?  Is it that more elderly are being infected in Germany possibly?

Germany had one of the lowest death rates and a very flat case count for most of this year until a fall/winter surge.  WSJ had this to say re: Germany's winning COVID strategy that's recently fallen apart:  https://www.wsj.com/articles/germanys-winning-covid-strategy-has-stopped-working-11608206996
Quote
So what happened?

Scientists, politicians and psychologists say many Germans, including some in the government, made a fatal error of judgment after Germany emerged comparatively unscathed this summer: They thought they were safe.

This assumption, combined with the government’s imposition of a moderate lockdown in November that left all shops, offices and factories open, meant Germans didn’t cut down on social contacts nearly enough as the virus began spreading again rapidly through the country, scientists say.
Things have definitely changed dramatically for them the past few months.  I know Merkel has been visible and empathetic with her commentary in recent days.  I cannot compare her to Trump from what I've seen when it comes to COVID.  The U.S. has 11.8x the total case count that Germany does (while being 4x their size in population) and 12.2x the total death count.  Trump's intentionally misled us and tried to sabotage efforts to protect Americans, whereas Merkel - as far as I know - has done no such thing.

Most of his tweets are about election fraud and conspiracy theories.

COVID is no longer a political cudgel he may or may not swing in his favour; it's not an entity with which he might pragmatically employ in the interests of his own self-aggrandisement.

Tony Schwartz said the deaths from COVID simply don't matter to Trump. He was right. He couldn't care less about it if can't be used to further his own re-election chances. But he would have infected all of us in an instant if it meant his reelection.

The degree of anger I have towards Trump is hard to quantify or even put into words.

The use of misinformation has killed and endangered so many and continues to do so.  Many Americans, dying of COVID, have still believed it was fake and that they had some other illness (lung cancer, flu, etc. ...anything, but COVID).  This is difficult to watch/listen to:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WicsWfTm1ZI

How many took it less seriously, because of Trump?  My own mother almost went out to vote in long lines.  A Trump fanatic friend of hers has been sharing what I feel is fake news with her for months.  They both believe the election was stolen.  Her friend does not care about masks much.  She's gone right up to my mom's face without one to chat - despite the fact they're both in their 70's with husbands that have pre-existing conditions (cancer and heart disease).

Had I not had an explosive fight with my mother, she would have gone out to vote in the most dangerous time.  We got her to do mail-in ballots.  She was ready to risk her life for a CON ARTIST POTUS, saying COVID was no big deal.  I still wonder if she'd have died if I hadn't stopped her.  She believes all the fake news claims...knows lots of Trump conspiracies and tries to spread them.

I am so disturbed and distraught by what Trump has created using misinformation. . .

Trump on Sunday fired off this tweet: "The number of cases and deaths of the China Virus is far exaggerated in the United States because of the @CDCgov's [CDC's] ridiculous method of determination compared to other countries, many of whom report, purposely, very inaccurately and low."

Trump then took aim at Fauci in a subsequent tweet, that read, quote: "Something how Dr. Fauci is revered by the LameStream Media as such a great professional, having done, they say, such an incredible job, yet he works for me and the Trump Administration, and I am in no way given any credit for my work..."
This is beyond words.

From this article at https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/politics/trump-covid-pandemic-dark-winter/ (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/politics/trump-covid-pandemic-dark-winter/)

Quote
“I think he’s just done with covid,” said one of Trump’s closest advisers who, like many others interviewed for this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity to candidly discuss internal deliberations and operations. “I think he put it on a timetable and he’s done with covid. . . . It just exceeded the amount of time he gave it.”

Right now, Trump is more concerned with overturning the election than with dealing with the biggest threat to our country.  He only cares about the biggest threat to Donald Trump and the conspiracy theories he's bought into.  He's pathetic, but also extremely dangerous, because so many follow him in a way I can only describe as cult-like.

I long feared my California relatives would get COVID.  Several 70 and 80 year olds have it now.  We got the call last night.

California is a wreck.  I've already lost one person and I hope we don't lose anymore.  Pray for my family members.

eta:  It's particularly upsetting with the vaccines rolling out.  They never had a chance to get it yet.
