This is a peanut gallery thread where everyone (except atheists) can chat and make witty quips about the AO
"Atheism Plus" thread in which we aren't allowed to post. :(

Paul Rosenberg, a writer at the Richard Dawkins’ foundation says that a new abiogenesis theory from MIT professor Jeremy England has put God on the ropes and has terrified Christians.

Good on him (the MIT professor) for accepting that things which come into existence have a cause and that cause - if not God - can only be either spontaneous chance or inevitable necessity.

So he's going for the latter. He says its inexorable. Fair enough. And he is pinning his hopes/theory on thermodynamics.

But can a contained system - ie. The Universe - really be a good model in which his theory might operate?

Community Debates Forum / Aleph and FBA debate moral realism. Time to vote!
« on: December 23, 2015, 04:23:20 am »
I'm calling it.
Banjo Atheist winner by a narrow margin.

1. Because of the TKO. Aleph forfeits for non-compliance with deadline rule. (Ignoring the rules - really? In a debate about objective rules LOL Classic!)

2. Because Banjo's style beat Aleph's substance - and on substance they were a dead heat AFAICT

3. Because Banjo's case was more logically consistent. It was a "preferences versus intuition" cage fight but at least Banjo's debate didn't pretend that subjective preferences transcended subjective intuitions.

Thanks for the debate guys.

If you see a new face visiting RFF please note that Logos has set up a Welcome/Intro sub-forum.

What this place needs is a...
"New Members Welcome Thread/Forum"

Sticky somewhere near 'Teh Rulez' thread.

Upon joining, invite to all newly registered users to consider posting a self-intro.

Everybody piles on the newbie with friendly greetings and general house warming to break the ice.

Moderate the intro/welcome threads with a strict "No Debate" "No AvT Agenda pushing" rule.

Let's see to it that newly registered users don't just lurk and leave.

First encounters could be daunting for some newcomers and this type of fellowship/social intro thread is a great way for 'newbies' to acclimatize. So.....

Greetings :)
You are cordially invited to our new Intros and Welcoming Thread here.

Paris Tragedy - Prayer and Consolation Thread.
(No Debating Please. No politics. No apologetics.)

I think it necessary that we have a dedicated thread which can serve as a debate-free zone for those who wish to post prayers or share fellowship in consolation with one another after this horrible tragedy in France.

Please respect this as a 'safe space'.

"...The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

Thank you God for 30 years of happy marriage. A richer blessing I could never hope for than my beautiful wife and God’s holy sacrament of marriage.

I can’t believe time has flown by so fast. November 1985 seems like just yesterday.

You have blessed me, just as you did my father (and my father-in-law) with a true Proverbs 31 wife.

Quote
…A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

…Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

…She gets up while it is still night she provides food for her family

…She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

…She is clothed with strength and dignity;  she can laugh at the days to come.

…She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

…She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

…Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

…Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

…Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

You have to vote to see the progressive tally/result.
Poll runs 60 days.
If you dont vote it is assumed you dont particularly mind one way or the other.

Is it my imagination or does this logo remind you of a road winding its way up a hill towards a Cross at the top?

I would be interested in discussing the views of atheists and theists whether the so-called "Atheism Plus" movement constitutes an admission that ridding the world of religion would leave a great big empty spot that atheism/secularism cant otherwise fill.

I strongly compete ideologically with the stone cold, heartlessness of the atheist who says...away with religion/spirituality and then offers a blank stare when asked what will replace it?

Where does charity and social justice and pacifism and the ''common good'' fit into atheology?

I'm enjoying watching this intriguing movement (hopefully) progress.

There's something which motivates the social justice heart of some atheists which is MORE than mere atheism. It certainly is a PLUS sign
