##### Choose Your Own Topic / Re: Argument against Infinity
« on: May 19, 2015, 04:34:17 pm »

Having given it some more thought here is an alternate version of the argument that is perhaps more transparent

Argument against Infinity: (Alternate Version)
1.) If you could obtain the actual value of an infinite number of increments you could not add one more
2.) You can always add one more increment
3.) Therefore you cannot obtain the actual value of infinite number of increments

Infinity is not a number; you cannot add to it.

Yes, but that is the point of P1, if you could obtain an actual value of infinity you cannot add to it. But what is stopping us from throwing one more whatever into the pot?
The fact that infinity is not a number. Nothing can be added to divine simplicity or Plotinus' the One, either.

Would you argue that God is finite? I wouldn't. If I could add to God, he would not be that which nothing greater can be conceived.

Seriously. Was someone offended by this thread? Anyone who was is in serious need of a life.

Hence one reason I found it hilarious.
Yeah. I can see why! It's okay for atheists to parody theism with the FSM, but not okay to parody atheism with non-existent potatoes. Go figure. Is it hypocrisy or a double-standard?

All one has to do is watch and listen to the first few minutes of the video to see the similar styles of Dillahunty, David Duke and Moot.

Really? What in particular are the similarities between my and Matt Dillahunty's style?
Evasiveness.

Does he once make an argument for atheism? Does he once make an argument against God religion per se? Does he once encourage his audience to delve deeply into the topic? Does he once exhibit more that a very superficial understanding of God and religion? Is he clearly vitriolic in what he says and the way he says it? If not, why not?

Show how you are different.

What argument have I evaded? I haven't even presented an argument. Why would you accuse me of evasiveness?

I haven't accused you of anything Booger. I only wanted to know if you could give an example of Dillahunty spreading willfull ignorance and being a bigot. Way to stay civilized.

Do you mean in general or in this specific talk?
ROFLMAO!!

My favorite episode of "The Atheist Experience": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13puH63HxmQ

Truly the hosts are an intellectual force to be reckoned with...by maybe third graders.
Third graders? You give them too much credit. (The panel, not third graders.)

I suffered through a few minutes with Matt Dillahunty before asking myself why, if he hates willfull ignorance so much, is he doing so much to promote it?

I'm certainly no fan of Dillahunty, but I think he ususally makes some ok points. Could you give an example of him promoting willfull ignorance?
In the few minutes I watched he did make some valid points. In fact, there was very little with which I disagreed. (I'm not a big fan of organized religion myself.) But disagreement with the teaching of any church has nothing to do with God or religion per se. All I saw in those few minutes was a bigot, another David Duke who could occasionally sound rational.
A half-truth is worse than a lie.

Mmm, ok... Could you give an example of his bigotry? Did he claim that disagreement with the teaching by churches had something to do with God or religion? If so, what was his supporting argument?
A half-truth is worse than a lie. An argument against creeds is neither an argument for atheism or an argument against God and religion per se. It's just hate.

I don't follow. Is he claiming that an argument against creed is an argument for atheism or against theism? If so, what's the argument.

Also, why do you think an argument against creed is hate?
I modified my post to say "vitriolic argument."

I perceive that you are one of the "nodding heads."

Could you give an example of his "vitriolic arguments"?

What do think I'm nodding my head at?

Does he once make an argument for atheism? No. Does he once make an argument against God religion per se? No. Does he once encourage his audience to delve deeply into the topic? No. Does he once exhibit more that a very superficial understanding of God and religion? No. Is he clearly vitriolic? Yes.

He is like a member of IS holding up a child's head and claiming victory because he managed to lop it off.

##### Choose Your Own Topic / Re: What are your reasons (philosophical) for rejecting Panentheism?
« on: May 19, 2015, 01:48:48 pm »
Well, I watched them.  Interesting as Closer to .truh always is.  You're right that comely was the best, but I'm glad to see that they had .sheldrake on (I have a lot of time for sheldrake, and he's ignored by many).

I was left with two things though:

A) it seems that panentheism is a very vague term that covers a wide field of different meanings and versions

B) I can't really see what's different in many types of panentheism and christian theism
That's why I suggested Sarah Coakley. She made that point herself.

The fact that an actual infinity cannot exist in the space-time universe does not mean infinity itself is impossible. Infinity includes the finite.

FYI, "infinity" is not a number so "adding one more" is a non sequitur. Infinity cannot be added on to.

Dillahunty would crush Craig in a debate. Obliterate. Annihilate. I mean the guy has his own TV show!
Ever watch The Atheist Experience? It caters to nodding heads and the willfully ignorant.
