Mormon scripture on the nature of matter and spirit
« on: July 25, 2013, 10:35:51 pm »
In the Utah LDS' scripture, Doctrine and Covenants 131:7-8, it states:

"7 There is no such thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes;

 8 We cannot see it; but when our bodies are purified we shall see that it is all matter."

Suppose, for the sake of argument, as the first verse indicates, that all spirit is matter, but that it cannot yet be discerned.  For example, suppose that spirit is matter that is not detectable by current scientific instruments or methods.  If true, what are the logical implications on key arguments for the existence of God and how would appeals to scientific evidence be impacted?

The Kalaam says that the cause of the universe was immaterial, so that argument might me out for mormons.

The point of the scripture is that there are real “things” in the spiritual realm, that it isn’t like fog or gas, and God’s omnipresence isn’t a mere generic “spreading around.” This has a huge impact on all previous theology, where the conceptions of God have been so vague it disallows the actual exercise of powers on either the material or spiritual plane.

However to formulate what spirit “is,” is exceedingly difficult since any analogies must be drawn from the physical realm that we contact through the senses. It’s an intriguing question, that one day an instrument may be devised, which will be able to detect spirit. But importantly, they are wrong who say things like “spirit is energy.” That’s why this verse was written. You can’t just wave your hands and say it’s like electricity. It’s real.

Importantly also, the human soul is spirit. Creation can be called a marriage of the material and spiritual planes. Spirit is the awareness and the motive force, composed of the varied individuals. Though men are souls in bodies, they are unable to perceive this. However the fact can be discerned by some individuals. Jesus said the pure in heart would see God, but they can also see the spiritual side of life, aware they’re not bodies.
