Quote by Joseph Campbell

Hi and God bless.
I am trying to dialogue with my sister who keeps telling me she doesn't
care about spiritual matters, yet she persists in giving this quote as
as a proof text as to what she believes. The quote is:

"God is a metaphor for a mystery that is beyond the scope of human understanding. Theists treat the metaphor as fact. Atheists know that metaphor is not fact" (Joseph Campbell).

Help please. (I did post this as a question for Dr. Craig but he's a bit busy(rightfully so)
Thanks.

It's weird for her to say that she doesn't care about spiritual matters because that quote suggests that such matters are important, even if they are misunderstood by theists.

The authors of the NT believed that Jesus' resurrection was an historical event and if it wasn't, then their preaching and faith were useless.  If it's all a metaphor for a mystery that is beyond the scope of human understanding, then what is its purpose?
"Faith is nothing less than the will to keep one's mind fixed precisely on what reason has discovered to it.”

Yeshua answered them, “The reason you go astray is that you are ignorant both of the Tanakh and of the power of God. - Matthews 22:29 (CJB)
