#636 Defenders—Where to Begin?

June 23, 2019
Q

Dr Craig,

I am looking for some guidance. I wish to closely follow your 'Defenders' Series. Still, I am unsure as to whether I should begin with Series1/Series2/Series3. What are the differences between these three series? I am a Christian, and am looking for a refresher of sorts. Many thanks.

For Christ our King,

George

Thanks for your interest in our weekly Defenders class on Christian doctrine and apologetics, George! Having taught seminary myself, I can say pretty confidently that if you follow faithfully the entire Defenders series, you will get a much better education in Christian theology than most seminarians.

Series 1 is old and incomplete and serves only an archival purpose. Series 2 serves as a complete survey of Christian doctrine, including those themes which we have yet to reach in our current Series 3. Series 3 is thus the up-to-date series, which includes much new material. For example, when I did Series 2, I had not yet studied the atonement in depth nor the question of the historical Adam, topics which are treated in considerable detail in Series 3.

So you should begin with Series 3, “Foundations of Christian Doctrine,” and follow it through. If you’re interested in a theme (say, Doctrine of the Last Things) which we haven’t yet reached in Series 3, only then should you revert to Series 2 for my most recent teaching on that subject.

In case some readers are unaware, the videos of the Defenders class can be watched either on Sunday morning at 11:40 eastern time (U.S.) via livestream at https://www.facebook.com/reasonablefaithorg/ or on our YouTube channel in edited format at https://www.youtube.com/user/ReasonableFaithOrg.

If you don’t want to take the time to watch videos, transcripts of all the lessons are available at https://www.reasonablefaith.org/podcasts/defenders-podcast-series-3. Just click on “View Podcasts” and then “Listen & More.”
